Scout Report

When your backcourt features three nationally-ranked guards, someone has to be the glue guy who makes it all work together.

Background

Martay Barnes has found his home at The Academy of Central Florida, where he runs alongside some serious talent in that loaded backcourt. Playing with fellow 2027 standout Martay Barnes and Marlon Martinez, plus big man Preston Wade who's also headed to Tallahassee, this kid has learned to play winning basketball in a competitive environment. The Central Florida pipeline to major programs continues to produce.

Playing Style

Barnes brings that steady combo guard skill set that college coaches love. His shooting stroke is reliable from deep and he's got enough range to stretch defenses when he catches in rhythm. What separates him is his defensive awareness and ability to make the right read consistently. He won't wow you with athleticism but he processes the game well and rarely forces bad shots or passes. Still needs to get stronger handling pressure and creating his own shot against length, but his basketball IQ covers up some physical limitations.

Recruitment

Landing at Florida State early shows the Seminoles believe in his upside, especially with his teammate Preston Wade joining him in Tallahassee. At 90th nationally, he's flying under the radar compared to some flashier guards, but Leonard Hamilton has a track record of developing cerebral players like this. Could be a steal if he continues improving his physical tools.
