Uncommitted
Scout Report
When you're running point guard at Huntington Prep with a Kentucky commit on your wing, the spotlight finds you whether you're ready or not.
Background
Payne landed at the West Virginia basketball factory that's produced countless Division I talents over the years. Playing alongside Braydon Hawthorne, who's heading to Lexington, and rising 2027 big man Taj Saragba gives him a legitimate supporting cast. The program's reputation for developing guards means he's getting quality coaching and exposure on the prep circuit.
Playing Style
As the floor general for a loaded Huntington Prep roster, Payne has to manage the ball and get his teammates involved first. His court vision and decision-making are developing nicely, though he can force passes when the defense pressures him. The jump shot needs consistency, especially from three-point range where he's streaky right now. His best asset is his basketball IQ and ability to control tempo, but he'll need to add strength and improve his first step to create separation against elite competition.
Recruitment
The offers haven't started rolling in yet, but playing at Huntington Prep typically opens doors as the season progresses. His association with higher-ranked teammates could help or hurt depending on how college coaches evaluate his individual impact. Mid-major programs should start showing interest first, with potential for high-major looks if his shooting improves significantly.
