Scout Report
When a nationally-ranked guard from the Tar Heel State chooses to stay home and compete in the ACC, expectations run high from day one.
Background
Hailing from Greensboro, North Carolina, Jaylen Cross developed his game at Caldwell Academy where he became a cornerstone of their program. The 6-4 shooting guard navigated the competitive AAU circuit while establishing himself as one of the premier backcourt prospects in his home state. His journey through prep basketball culminated with recognition as the #208 player nationally in the 2025 recruiting class.
Playing Style
Cross brings an ideal combination of size and skill to the shooting guard position, with his 6-4 frame allowing him to create shots over smaller defenders while possessing the athleticism to compete with bigger wings. His offensive versatility stands out as his calling card, capable of scoring from multiple levels and creating his own shot in isolation situations. The Greensboro native shows solid court vision and basketball IQ, often making the right read in transition and half-court sets. While his defensive consistency needs refinement at the college level, his length and lateral quickness provide a foundation to build upon.
Recruitment
Cross fielded offers from Wake Forest, Cal, and North Carolina before ultimately committing to the Demon Deacons. His decision to stay close to home positions him well to make an immediate impact in Winston-Salem, where his scoring ability and versatility should translate effectively to ACC competition. With proper development, Cross projects as a multi-year contributor who could evolve into a primary offensive weapon.
